East Beach Lagoons

Great Galveston Birding Trail

Tour Name: Great Galveston Birding Trail

Description: As you return from Big Reef and Apffel Park, notice the lagoons to the east that border Seawall Blvd. This is the East Beach Lagoons, a nature sanctuary that is in the process of being established by the city. Watch for red-breasted mergansers, common loons, and a variety of herons and egrets. Roseate spoonbills and white ibis are almost always present, and the fields around the lagoons often host white-tailed kites and American kestrels in the winter. Karla Klay's Artist Boat is a Galveston nonprofit that regularly offers kayak tours of the East Beach Lagoons. Artist Boat is "dedicated to promoting awareness and preservation of coastal margins and the marine environment through the disciplines of the sciences and the arts."
